Bees and Wasps Still Stinging Around Louisville

Did you know that bees and wasps can get hangry, a mixture of hungry and angry? It’s fall here in Louisville, and stinging pests are everywhere. Hives are reaching max capacity and queens are demanding food for winter. Looking at their work environment, we can understand why worker bees and wasps might be a little aggressive. If you were hungry, overworked, constantly being bossed around by an overbearing queen (knowing you only have a few months left to live) you would probably be a little aggressive too. Let's take a look at some factors that could inadvertently be attracting these hangry pests to your property and some problems these pests can cause.

Common Bee and Wasp Attractants

Sweet things attract unsweet stingers. Be wary of soda or juice that is left out, as these beverages are just as enjoyable to bees and wasps as they are to some humans. Another common attractant for stingers are sweet-smelling scents, so if you enjoy sweet aromas in your home, but do not enjoy bees and wasps flying about, consider these exclusion tips.

  • Seal holes or cracks found in your exterior foundation using a caulking gun.
  • Keep food, especially sweet foods, off counters and stored away in airtight containers.
  • Repair gaps found around doors and windows.
  • Repair or replace broken or torn window screens.
  • When outside, try to avoid wearing dark or floral print clothing, as these have been known to attract stingers.

Threats Bees and Wasps Bring

Being stung is never a pleasant experience. It’s even less pleasant if you have an allergy to the venom. An allergic reaction to these pests may cause anaphylactic shock. Symptoms include:

  • Decrease in blood pressure
  • Weak and rapid heart rate
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Headache
  • Swelling of the face, lips, and throat
  • Hives
  • Abdominal cramping
  • Diarrhea
  • Flushed or pale skin

Studies have shown that many Americans have this allergy, but are unaware.
