Fall Pest Preparation

You are in a battle. You may not realize it, but the walls of your home are being scouted every single day. Flying insects land on your window sills, crawling insects scale your basement walls, and wildlife scurry around your perimeter looking for any weak spots. This is a process that never ceases. The army that opposes you never stops encroaching. But, when fall comes, it will be as if an order is sent out through the enemy's ranks, an order to push with everything they have.

It isn't true, of course. Bugs and wildlife don't have an objective. They aren't really your enemy. They are just wired to find a place to hide when the cold weather begins. If they don't do this, they will die.

If you want to keep the fall invaders out, now is the time to bolster your defenses, just like an army would. When a scout returns with news that an invading army is on the way, the defending army will make sure everything is in place to repel the invaders. That means, making sure there are no holes, fortifying weak areas, and installing countermeasures. The same is true of pest control.

Fill The Holes

One of the best things you can do to stop bugs and animals from getting into your home is to seal up all the gaps, cracks, and holes. Do a detailed inspection of your exterior and a use caulking gun to seal any entry points you find. Check your screens and make sure they are in good working order. Apply mortar around basement windows if they need it. And, use window screening to cover vents and your chimney top.

Fortify Weak Areas

Some bugs and wildlife won't be stopped by walls that are sealed. They will try to get up to your vulnerable roofline. Trim tree branches back so pests can't use them as a bridge. Fill downspouts with mesh wiring to prevent rodents from climbing up. And reinforce any places that rodents can chew through.

Countermeasures

In ancient times an invading army, scaling the walls of a castle, would be met with boiling oil. With fall invaders, a focused and limited application of insecticides in all the right places will be enough to repel them.
