The best way to avoid breeding biting mosquitoes is to eliminate their breeding sites. Action Pest Control advises residents in Indiana, Kentucky, and Illinois to take precautionary steps to avoid mosquitoes carrying West Nile Virus.

Protect Your Home From Mosquitoes:

  • Eliminate potential breeding sites such as containers, bird baths, and low-lying areas that can collect standing water.
  • Be sure that screens on windows and doors are in good repair. Mosquitoes can enter through a tiny slit and pose a serious threat to people and pets indoors.
  • Keep gutters clean and free from leaf clutter to avoid drainage problems.

Protect Yourself From Mosquito Bites:

  • Stay indoors during dawn, dusk, and early evening when mosquitoes are more likely to bite.
  • Wear light-colored clothing, plus long-sleeved shirts and long pants for extra protection.
  • Use a repellent containing DEET on skin and clothing; apply repellent sparingly to exposed skin.
  • Protect your dog or cat with a product made especially for pets that repel mosquitoes.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are reporting the largest number of West Nile Virus cases in the history of the U.S. Most cases (537) have come from Texas, followed by Mississippi reporting 79 and Louisiana with 73 total cases as of August 21.

Though not as severe as in the states mentioned above, mosquitoes can still pose a threat to residents in Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky.
